Safety: Small, French villages are warm welcomes, flowers at the mairie and old men with their daily baguette under the arm. In Champagne it is also yards enclosed behind tall walls, shutters covering windows, howling dogs to scare you off and door phones to check whether the intruder is friend or enemy. I always wonder if the insecurity is real or created by the means taken to secure oneself. However, our gate has remained locked since the day after the car of the neighbour burned in a deliberately started fire.
